How Do I Break Free from My Job?

I feel stuck in my job. It sickens me every day when I wake up and think of going to work, again. I always get stuck in traffic with everyone racing to get to a job they hate. WHY?! How do I break free from my Job?

How Do We Get Stuck in Jobs We Hate?Miserable looking man

The simple answer is that most of us start out after high school or college needing a job to pay the bills or get that cool car that we just can’t live without. The next thing that happens is we aren’t making enough money to pay the bills and we start living from paycheck to paycheck.

How pitiful.

I have been in that situation for most of my life but I am bound and determined to break free of it.

But, How Do I Get Out of This Nightmare!

For most of us it comes down to your will. What are you willing to do to keep fighting to make a change?

Most of us in this situation don’t have a lot of money and we don’t want to lose the one job we have now because we have to feed ourselves and our family and pay for rent, and an old broken down car.

So, you find yourself in this situation. What are you going to do?

Are you one of those people standing in line hoping to get the winning lottery ticket? Good luck with that one.

Why are we standing in line to buy a lottery ticket when we know there’s no way we’re going to win? One word……

HOPE!Hope

We are hoping to change our lives and our future. We may not have much but we still have a little hope some place deep down in side our soul.

We must keep our hope alive. Do whatever you have to do to keep hope in your life. Don’t give up on your hopes and dreams.

You’re Stuck…….. Or Are You?

Believe me when I say I understand what it’s like to be stuck and never have enough money. Nearly everyone in my family barely survives month to month and the ones who look like they’re doing great are actively going in the debt hell-hole.

What can you do? You can choose to keep going down this same path and be in this same situation many years from now. Does that sound appealing to you?

Or…….you can start making a change.

This change doesn’t have to be this year, it’s just that you need to start making the change.

How many of us are all for the “get-rich-quick scheme” and “lets make that change right now?”

Let me ask you a question. How many great things in life usually happen to you instantly? Don’t those wonderful things normally take time? Pine Tree

Let me ask you another question. How many times have you looked back on your life and said……”If I would have only planted that tree 10 years ago, it would be huge by now?” I can’t tell you how many times I have chosen not to do something because it would take a few years and then five years later I’m kicking myself because of it.

Time goes by much faster than we think. Time seems slow right now, probably because you’re reading this article, but you will wake up months from now wondering where did the time go.

So, You Are Not Stuck! You Only Think You Are

I guarantee you everyone that’s reading these words is not stuck. You may have to take some extreme action to get “unstuck” but you are not stuck.

You need to start looking farther into the future and begin planning. Maybe you need to make an immediate change to get you to the place where you can really plan but you need to have a long term outlook.Sprinter

Think about this. Everyone loves to watch the super fit sprinters at the Olympics. They sure look good and they are ripped all over and WOW! How explosive!

BANG! They’re out of the blocks and 10 seconds later they’re raising their hands in victory, wrapping themselves in their countries flag, or they’re on the ground gasping for breath.

Which one do you want to be……and I’m not talking about any of them.

I’m talking about the skinny long distant runners who are taking hours to run a race that seems to never end. These runners aren’t massively built. They are not built for incredible bursts of speed. They are built for the long, grinding, mentally excruciating race that never seems to end.

Long Distance runner
Now, once again……which one do you want to be…..in LIFE?

We need to stop thinking of ourselves as being in a sprint but being in a marathon. Not many people want to run marathons, because they’re hard, they take forever and you have to train forever to be great at them.

Life is Not a Sprint…… Life is a Marathon

Stop what you’re doing and write down what you have always wanted to do. Maybe you have several things.

I recommend you keep it to yourself for a short time and keep adding to it for a few days or a week. Next, take some time and get away from everyone. Maybe your alone time is at the park or in a quiet room when everyone is freaking over some sporting event.

Find some alone time and really ponder what you want.

Next, start developing a plan of how you will get there. Find someone who can give you guidance or at least encouragement and isn’t going to laugh at you and tell you “that will never happen.”

Find friends that are positive, encouraging and looking for hope as you are.

If you are in a horrible situation than the first thing you need to do is remove yourself from that place.

REMEMBER, AT ALL COST……FIND YOUR HOPE!…….and never stop fighting and believing in you.

  1. Hi Rick
This is what I call a reality check, we become so complacent in our daily grind that many of our dreams are shelved, all it takes is a little determination, and a will to do better, believing in oneself is mandatory, to get back on track, and a post such as this to remind us that the end has not come, but a new beginning beckons.

Thanks Rick for the reality jolt, great post.

    All the best

    • That’s great what you just said about the end has not yet come. It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, there is always something constructive we can be doing to create a better life for us and our families.

The reality jolt is for all of us at times when we get happy living in that dark warm box that we like to stay in because it’s familiar.

I have been pushed out of my comfort zone so much lately at Wealthy Affiliate and now I am really out of it as I have started creating videos for my websites. Wow, this is a big step but will help me reach my goals for the future.

  2. Hi Rick,
Very inspiring article. What you said happened with me . I kept fighting and struggling to make a change. I finally decided to keep my job and try to build an internet business.. I will keep my job until I have freedom. It is really a big challenge.
I learned many tips from your article. Everybody should make a change to succeed. Besides, I liked this idea in which you said: I can’t tell you how many times I have chosen not to do something because it would take a few years and then five years later I’m kicking myself because of it. I am sure this happened with many of us. Yes, we Need to Make that Change Today.

    • It’s so true about how many times we put off doing something because it will take a long time. In this case, putting in the work for several years in order to create some financial freedom.

I brought up planting trees because this same issue has happened multiple times with trees. I love pine trees and here in Oklahoma, we don’t have a lot of them but I constantly put off planting them because they start off so small and it will take 10 years or more for them to grow significantly tall. We were in our first house for seven years and I should have planted some pine trees immediately and it wouldn’t have cost us much. We have been in our current house for 14 years now and those pine trees would have been really big if I would have spent just a few dollars to plant them when we moved in.

I am kicking myself twice now for not doing something that didn’t cost much and really didn’t take much time but I refused to do it because it was going to take so long for them to grow.

I don’t want to kick myself in the future again because I didn’t go for this opportunity online.

  3. Very nice informative article. I enjoyed reading it very much and I think you have a gift for inspiring people. I noticed one typo and if you wrote this intentionally I apologize. Towards the bottom of the article you wrote “Live is not a sprint it’s a marathon” I think you should change that to “life” it makes more sense. Very good job though!! Good luck

    • Thank you heather for the comment and for catching the Live & Life mistake. Sometimes my mind is moving too quickly and I miss things like that. Too bad spell check doesn’t catch words that are spelled correctly but are the wrong word.

Inspiration and encouragement are important to all of us and that is one of my goals with this website.

  4. I like your comparaison of life being a marathon rather than a sprint. It feels so much like a sprint sometimes. A sprint in which we feel stuck and overwhelmed by our busy everyday routine.

I feel stuck in a night shift job doing twelve hours straight. I don’t really need another job, although sometime I wonder how I will make it week after week to pay my monthly bills.

You talk about hope. But what other option do I have beside buying lottery tickets? If I could find something I could do from home that would be something I would consider. But other than that I’m not sure if there are any options.

    • I agree it feels like a sprint much of the time but we need to find was to keep a steady and maintainable pace or we will end up burned out, or worse yet, in the hospital fighting for our life. I should know, I’ve had a stroke already.

We all need to find ways to have hope for the future. I work about 60 hours each week trying to get my projects finished and sometimes I just want to go home and sleep, but I found something that has given me hope.

It started out with my son telling me about some scam or get rich scheme online called Wealthy Affiliate. I tried to talk him out of it but when he wouldn’t back down I decided to check it out to show him. Well, was I ever wrong.

This website has helped me to build two websites and start creating content that is already started making me a little money after only 2 months in the training. You may think that is a long time but not when the future prospects can be huge.

Building these websites and this online business has given me hope that eventually I will be able to breath and start paying off my debt. I even want to quit my current job and go full time with this in the near future. That near future may take a few years, but ask yourself this. How many years have gone by in your life and you looked back and wished you had started something?

I can’t tell you how to find hope in your life, but I can tell you how I found it in mine.

Check out Wealthy Affiliate here. It’s FREE to check it out and you can see if it is something that could give you hope.

  5. Great post Rick , very encouraging and I think it covers the biggest part of us. Or at least me any how, paycheck to paycheck is a scary way to have to live, but it’s the only way many of us can make it. I’m like you that it doesn’t have to be that way we can make a change we all have that hope and should act on it.

    • Thank you for the great comment Fred. The people that I see are the happiest, are those who have something to look forward too. If you think your current situation is the best it’s going to get than I believe that starts to sit negatively on you. I know that is a broad statement and is not true of some people but I believe it to be true of most people. I hope to encourage everyone who comes to my site to think about the future and start making short term and long term changes in their lives.
