Top Ten Computer Keyboards

What are the top ten computer keyboards for 2018? There are a lot of opinions out there but I’m going to break down the best keyboards for business professionals and online web surfers.

I will state right up front that I am not looking for or have any intention of ranking the best gaming keyboards. Those fall into a different category.

What Makes Great Computer Keyboards?

In this new age of computers and connectability with everyone seemingly having access to a laptop and smart phone, maybe it’s time to consider what you use more than anything else when you are on the computer. It’s your keyboard. So, what makes a great computer keyboard?

  • Connectivity – Many keyboards can connect wirelessly and will connect to more than one device like your smart phone and tablet. If you are on the go and are always connecting to the internet than this may be high on your list of wants or needs.
  • Portability – This is really important to many people today. Is your keyboard lightweight, thin, does it fold up?
  • Comfort – How comfortable is your body position and the keyboard and will you start feeling the strain of typing after several hours.
  • Key Switches – Did you know there are three main type of key switches? Each one has their place.
    • Silicone Dome
    • Scissor Switches
    • Mechanical Switches
  • Backlighting – Do you work in low light or at night? Make sure your keyboard is backlit.
  • Gaming – Gaming keyboards are a huge market and everyone seems to want the latest cool, multicolored, programmable keys with great sensitivity and durability.

These are some of the things to consider when looking for the right keyboard.

Here are the Top Ten Computer Keyboards

Please allow me this disclaimer.

There are many types of keyboards and many users with different needs so this is my opinion as to the top keyboards on the market. I am an engineer that spends a lot of time designing highways, creating my own websites and occasionally joining in an online game. I am not looking for anything that is solely portable or for gaming. I need comfort, durability and a keyboard that can meet my demands as I transition from work to my own online business, and then to play games occasionally.

Here is my top ten computer keyboard list. It is not ranked in any way other than the ones near the top showed up more on product reviews and customer reviews than the others.

Logitech K780 Wireless Multi-Device keyboard

 Logitech K780 Wireless Multi-Device Keyboard

This is a great keyboard for mobile users. You can pair three mobile devices at the same time and the base can also hold one or more of them. The keyboard has silent typing and works with PC, Mac, Chrome OS, Android and iOS.

Corsair K95 RGB Platinum Gaming keyboard

Corsair K95 RGB Platinum Gaming Keyboard

I know I said that I would not focus on any gaming keyboards but this one and a few others kept coming up in multiple product reviews, so I decided to include them in my top ten list.

The Corsair K97 came up in many gaming keyboard reviews as the top gaming keyboard. I will leave that for all of you gamers to argue about. I’m just creating this list of my personal research.

This keyboard has dedicated controls and responsive and customizable keys. There are speed switches and an 8MB profile storage. It also comes with hardware macros, multicolored backlit keys and playback enabled profile access.

There’s not much more you need to add to this keyboard except your credit card to have it delivered to your door.

It is ultra thin and has Bluetooth for syncing to other devices. You can pair with two mobile devices at the same time. The only drawback I can find on this one is that you need a flat surface to lay the keyboard on. Users say that it does not work well sitting, when using it in your lap.

I’m going to end my keyboard review with another gaming keyboard. This beauty has programmable keys and reliable sensitivity. It is extremely durable and has amazing multicolored backlit keys. The keyboard has mechanical switches with macro keys, dedicated audio/USB pass through and an ergonomic wrist rest.

My Final Thoughts

This was another eye-opening research project. I thought I had a great keyboard and all I needed to do was walk into any office supply store and pick out a cheap keyboard and I would be off to the races. That is true but there is so much more out there in the way of keyboards that can improve your typing experience and can also help relax your arms, hands and even help alleviate some physical problems associated with long hours of typing.

So, stop before you run off to that electronics store and see what other options are available to you. Start right here with this review and end up with a new keyboard that will make you wonder why you used that old cheap keyboard for so long.

  1. Hi Rick
Excellent review on these keyboards, you have given here an excellent overview on keyboards I didn’t even know that existed! Well I am no world expert but this is really good to know.
Personally I type A LOT so I need a good durable keyboard with ‘light’ touch keys otherwise my writs get really tired out.
I see that the Happy Hacking Professional Keyboard comes with a slot for your phone – is this a charger too? or only a place holder to see what you are typing? And is it only form Apple Mac computers or can it be used for Androids too?
    Cheers – Orion

    1. Hi Orion and thank you for the questions on the Happy Hacking Pro2.

I apologize for the confusion but the Happy Hacking Pro2 does not have a holder for your phone. You are seeing the picture of the Logitech K480 below. I will update the article and add some horizontal lines to separate the models better.

The Happy Hacking Pro 2 can be used on PC’s also. The audio controls are for Mac users only.

      I hope that helps.

  2. Great post Rick. I’ve been looking for a portable keyboard so I can type right in to my phone when traveling without my laptop. It looks like the Logitech Bluetooth Multi-Device Keyboard K480.
What the battery life on unit like this? Do you have to charge it regularly?

    1. Logitech claims the batteries will last up to two years. Maybe that is for users who barely pull the keyboard out and also live in a cold environment.

I think it’s safe to say that you won’t need to replace the batteries in your keyboard for at least a year which is plenty long for me. This keyboard does have a battery life indicator that will give you a heads up when you need to change out the batteries.

You would not need to continuously charge the Logitech K480. It’s probably best to be proactive though and change out the batteries every year.

    1. Thank you Norman. I actually have my eye on a few of these new keyboards. My concern is more with the easy of using the keys and what type of switches they have.

I currently use a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000 keyboard but I’m pretty sure I can find a keyboard here that has a lot nicer feel and smoothness when it comes to the keys.

  3. This article has shown me that there are big differences in keyboards. I never thought that one could outdo another. I thought they were all the same, you know, they are just for typing. Thanks for opening my eyes and showing me there are choices to be made to find the best one.

    1. You and I have had the same wrong impression for a long time. I thought all I had to do was going into any electronic store and buy a cool looking keyboard that only cost $20 to $40 dollars. I have done that but now I see there can be a major difference, especially when we type for long hours.

Stop back by and let me know if you buy a new keyboard.

  4. Hi Rick, great post! Wow I did not know a keyboard could make such a difference. It is a good review. Do you perhaps know how long a good quality keyboard will last?

    1. The best I can tell you about the longevity of a keyboard is from my personal experience. I have bought good performing keyboards in the past without consideration to longevity and all of my keyboards have lasted at least 6 years or more, unless you spill a soda into it.

I think the bigger question is how long will a keyboard keep up with the ever changing pace of technology. You may have to change out keyboards every 2 to 3 years to keep up with the advancements in technology.

        1. You are welcome and please stop back by and let me know what you get when you buy your next keyboard.

Do you think you are going to go with one from a store or are you considering one from the list in this article?

  5. Hello, Rick!
The list you provided is pretty cool as it covers a lot of different topics due to people’s needs!
My best friend LOVES playing games all day long, and he actually owns the ” Corsair Strafe RGB Silent Mechanical Gaming Keyboard ” and he said that it’s his favorite out of all the ones he tried already and that I should get one too!
Funny enough, the only game I play is “Candy Crush” on my phone (haha don’t judge me), and so I actually just ordered myself the “Apple Magic Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard” as I have a Mac, and I love the fact that I don’t need to connect it with a wire!
    Moral: to each is own!
    Thanks for the post,
    -Anna.

    1. I hear what you’re saying. I was not aware of all the great keyboards on the market until recently.  It was not my intention either of including any gaming keyboards in my top ten list but it’s hard to leave them off the list when they keep showing up over and over.

Keyboards are no different than laptops and monitors. There are many to choose from and we all have different needs and desires when it comes to technology.

    1. The switch is inside each key and is what you feel and hear when you depress the keys. There are three main type of switches. These switches are silicone dome, scissor switches and, mechanical switches. Most gaming keyboards use a mechanical switch.

      Does that answer your question?

  6. Hello Rick: such a wonderful experience. I have fallen victim as this is my first laptop I used without knowing that I have to research about the best keyboards before placing an order. I really suffered in that system to copy or high wright, and it is always problem for me but I that God I came across this information. Now I thank you for this information and I have learned my lesson.

    1. I’m glad I could help. I also have fallen victim to purchasing something without knowing that there are many more options out there. In fact, after my research on this article, I am about to buy one of the keyboards on this list. I like the ergonomic keyboards but there are some standard layout keyboards here with more sensitive keys that everyone says will make my typing experience better.

  7. Hi, Rick, what a great review of the best keyboards . Keyboard K480 has really got my attention, it can switch between devices and so makings it a multi purpose usage and for the fact that it is comfortable to use is another advantage because I don’t really like anything discomforting while working on my computer.
Your site is good for revisit.

    1. Thank you for the compliment. I do my best to get the information out there without making it too long of a read but yet getting enough written about each keyboard to help you make a decision.

I am planning on buying one of these in the next month or two. I’m tired of my loud, less than smooth keys. I use an ergonomic keyboard now that I really enjoy because of the comfort of my hand placement but I think I’m going to try out one that has smoother and more quiet keys.

  8. This is such great information! I didn’t even know there were this many options, let alone that some were that much better than others.
I will definitely have to bookmark this page next time I am in the market for a keyboard. This is so helpful. Thank you!

    Sarae

    1. You’re welcome. I have been in the same situation as you. No longer. I will soon make my next keyboard purchase and then I’ll be wondering why I ever used that old keyboard for so long.

Stop back by and let me know what you go with.

  9. I found your post helpful and informative. I purchased a cheap laptop recently and have not been impressed with its keyboard functioning so your post is right on time. The three keyboard features that appeal to me most are portability, comfort and backlighting. Of the keyboards that you reviewed I like the Logitech K780 the best. I like the feature of being able to link up to three devices. I am always switching between multiple sources from my iphone to my laptop to our mac. Great food for thought!

    1. Hey Stacy, I’m glad you found something you liked in the list. The Logitech K780 is a great keyboard and you’re right about the multi-device options. That is becoming more important these days.

What do yo think about the base being able to hold your smartphone or tablet? Do you think that is also something that you would use a lot?

  10. Hello Rick, great product review on the keyboards. I happen to own an ipad, and I would love to purchase the Logitech K480 since it is compatible with it. This would make typing on my ipad a whole lot easier. Thanks again, and keep up the great work!!!

    1. You are the second person that has commented on the Logitech K480. The compatibility is becoming a big deal these days with our multiple devices.

Thank you for stopping by and letting me know what one you are interested in.
